What is an Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte?

The iced pumpkin chai latte combines chai tea concentrate with sweet pumpkin cream cold foam.

Pumpkin pie spice is sprinkled over the top, giving the drink one final blast of fall flavor.

What’s in an Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte?

The pumpkin spice chai latte has a few main components.

And the true gift of making this drink at home is that you get to decide how it all comes together!

    Chai

This popular drink is traditionally a blend of black tea, spices, and milk.

Chai tea lattes can be served either hot or cold.

The chai tea base can be either homemade or purchased from the store.

My favorite brand of done-for-you chai is Oregon Chai. It has the best overall flavor and holds up well in recipes such as this one.

The flavor of Oregon Chai is very similar to what you would find at a coffee shop.

But I prefer to make my own blend of spices and use decaf black tea.

You can also buy chai tea bags, although I have found the flavor very different from coffee shop versions.

The tea also ends up with a weak flavor that doesn’t combine well with the other flavors in this particular drink.

Despite the weaker flavor, it doesn’t have the higher amount of sugar that Oregon Chai has.

It also doesn’t contain the actual spices, eliminating possible “sludge” at the bottom of your glass.

If time is a factor, use Oregon Chai.

And if not, make your own batch of spices that you can combine with black tea for a unique, personalized version of this fall menu drink item!

    Milk

The standard Starbucks version uses 2% milk; feel free to use your favorite milk.

There is milk in both the chai and the cold foam portions of this drink.

I prefer oat milk because it has a subtle flavor and foams well in the frother.

From a flavor perspective, almond milk works well, although it doesn’t froth very well.

Whole milk is another option that gives you a more robust drink.

You could also try one type of milk in the chai portion and another in the cold foam portion.

Experiment and see what tastes the best!

    Sweet Pumpkin Cold Foam

Cold foam is simply cold milk that has been frothed to give it body.

Flavor syrup is generally added before it is frothed.

The cold foam in this recipe gets its pumpkin flavor from pumpkin puree sweetened with a hint of honey.

But you could substitute pumpkin spice syrup if you don’t want to make your own.

Either way, pumpkin cold foam is a tasty treat that is the perfect finishing touch to this delectable drink!

Why Should You Try the Homemade Version?

For years, I had been a silent bystander to the craziness of pumpkin spice season.

I saw people posting on social media about how much they craved that pumpkin spice flavor from their favorite seasonal latte.

Trying the drink had been on my bucket list, but I only took the plunge this fall when I wanted to create an easy Starbucks copycat recipe.

And so, I found myself in line at the local Starbucks coffee shop, ordering the iconic fall classic.

I couldn’t wait for that very first sip!

But my very first experience with the pumpkin spice latte was highly disappointing.

I found the drink sickeningly sweet, even by my standards.

There also was way less pumpkin flavor than I was expecting.

I found the drink so disappointing that I didn’t even finish it!

My disappointment with the drink inspired one of my favorite Starbucks copycat recipes.

By recreating the drink myself, I captured what I feel are iconic fall flavors without a lot of sugar or preservatives.

And by using real ingredients, I get the added bonus of each ingredient’s health bonuses.

Although creating coffee shop-style drinks at home may seem intimidating, you can have total control over what you add, and it’s a lot simpler than it appears at first glance.

You decide how much sugar and flavoring should be added.

Becoming a home barista is the best way to take control of your coffee habit!

And just think about all the time and money you’ll save by avoiding the drive-thru.

    It’s a truly empowering feeling!

Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte

Pumpkin + Chai … what could be better?!
    Servings 1

    Ingredients

    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
    • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
    • 2 cups boiling water
    • 2 black tea bags
    • 3 tsp honey divided, more to taste
    • 3/4 cup milk divided
    • 1 tsp pumpkin pie filling
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • cinnamon garnish
    • ice

    Instructions

    • Combine the cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and cloves in a small bowl and stir to combine. For a finer consistency, put the spice mixture in a spice grinder.
    • Combine the boiling water, tea bags, 2 tsp of honey, and spice mixture and allow to steep for 10 minutes. A 2-cup glass measuring cup works well for this step.
    • Once the mixture is done steeping, remove the tea bags. Give the mixture a stir. If you didn’t grind the spices, you may want to strain the mixture to remove the excess spices. Do this by placing a cheesecloth into a strainer. Position the strainer over a pitcher and pour the mixture into the strainer to remove the sediment.
    • Fill your favorite glass with ice. Then pour your homemade chai concentrate to fill the glass about halfway. Store the remainder of the chai concentrate in the fridge for up to 5 days.
    • Add approximately 1/4 cup milk to your glass and stir.
    • Combine 1 teaspoon honey, pumpkin pie filling, 1/2 cup milk, and vanilla extract in a milk frother. You can also use a blender or handheld frother. Froth and pour into your glass.
    • Sprinkle the drink with cinnamon and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is an iced chai tea latte good for you?

Chai has several ingredients with health-promoting properties. Cinnamon, for example, has been shown to lower blood sugar and improve heart health.

Ginger is another common ingredient found in chai, and this spice is often effective in reducing nausea and improving digestion.

Cloves and cardamom have antibacterial properties that can ultimately improve digestive health.

It’s important to note that the amount of these spices found in most pre-mixed versions of chai is often too small to produce these benefits.

And most store-bought chai has almost more sugar than is recommended on a daily basis.

But by making your own chai at home, you can add more spice and less sugar, giving you a tasty and healthy drink!

    Does chai have caffeine?

Chai contains black tea, which traditionally has caffeine.

Most coffee shop versions are, therefore, caffeinated.

If you want to avoid caffeine, use decaffeinated black tea.

How much sugar is in an iced pumpkin cream chai tea latte?

Order a grande of this drink from your local Starbucks, and you will consume over 60 grams of sugar. For comparison, this is more than 15 teaspoons of sugar!

Current health guidelines recommend limiting daily sugar to between 6 and 9 teaspoons a day, depending on individual factors, including gender and activity level.

One of the most significant benefits of making barista-quality drinks at home is controlling the ingredients.

And by adding less sugar, you can make healthy adjustments to the drink without sacrificing flavor.

Does chai have coffee in it?

Chai generally does not have coffee as it’s a tea-based drink.

But if you add a shot of espresso, the drink is known as a “dirty chai.”

    Final Thoughts

The iced pumpkin cream chai tea latte is the perfect way to celebrate fall!

It’s creamy and comforting, and by making it at home, you can reap all the added health benefits of fresh ingredients.

Not to mention the added savings you’ll get by skipping the drive-thru!

Fall is just around the corner, but the new fall drinks have already hit coffee shop menus.

What is an Iced Apple Crisp Shaken Espresso?

The new iced apple crisp shaken espresso combines the crisp flavor of biting into a juicy apple with creamy oat milk and the subtle notes of blonde roast espresso.

This drink proves that although many diehard Starbucks fans consider fall to be pumpkin spice season, the fantastic balance of apple, hints of cinnamon, and richness of espresso combine to create a drink that easily rivals the PSL as the signature fall drink.

I would even venture to say the apple crisp shaken espresso features all the best flavors of a homemade apple crisp in drink form.

What’s in an Iced Apple Crisp Shaken Espresso?

You can quickly whip up a glass of this refreshing drink with a few simple ingredients.

    Espresso

If you have a Keurig, you can easily recreate the espresso portion of the drink by opting for the Starbucks veranda blend pods.

And if you have a Nespresso, you can also find Starbucks blonde espresso pods of this roast for your machine as well.

Regular espresso machine owners can find Starbucks brand blonde espresso roast beans to give this drink that authentic Starbucks flavor at home.

No worries if you don’t have a Keurig, Nespresso, or espresso machine! You can still recreate the flavors of blonde espresso with regular coffee.

Go for a blonde roast coffee instead of medium or dark roasts and brew slightly stronger with your drip machine or French press to mimic the espresso flavor of the coffee house version.

Starbucks also makes instant blonde roast coffee, which is a convenient option if you don’t want to mess with a coffee maker.

The instant coffee has a nice flavor that perfectly complements the other flavors in this drink.

I experimented with several different ways however for this particular recipe, my favorite involves making espresso in my French press.

Recreating coffee shop drinks at home should be a fun, stress-free experience, so use what you have. It’s all about using what you have on hand to recreate your favorite flavors!

    Milk

The original drink features oat milk to add the hint of oat flavor characteristic of an apple crisp.

But feel free to use any milk you have for this drink.

Almond milk adds a slightly nutty flavor, as does soy milk.

You can also use regular dairy milk, such as 2% or whole milk.

The added fat content in these milks adds more body and substance to the drink.

Up the luxury feel of the drink by using cold foam.

    Apple Flavor

There are several ways to recreate this portion of the drink.

If you envision yourself making several glasses of this drink over the next week or so, you can make a homemade batch of apple syrup.

To do this, combine equal amounts of brown sugar and water and several sliced apples. If you want stronger apple flavor, opt for 2-3 large apples for 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water.

I recommend using Honeycrisp apples as their sweet flavor comes through the best in the syrup.

Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for around 20 minutes or until the apples soften.

Pour the mixture through a strainer to remove the apple skins. Press with a spoon to remove as much juice as possible from the apples.

The mixture will stay fresh for 5-7 days in the refrigerator.

If you want a flavor option that will stay fresh longer, opt for store-bought syrup.

    • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/4 cup oatmilk
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • ice

    Instructions

    • Combine brown sugar, water, and apples in a medium saucepan. Heat to boiling and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Skip this step if you’re using pre-made apple syrup.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make a hot version of the apple crisp oat milk shaken espresso?

The hot version of this drink is also known as an apple crisp macchiato. This drink featuring the flavors of apple crisp is one of Starbucks’ featured fall menu items, found only during the fall season.

Recreate your own by warming oat milk and pouring it into your favorite mug. Top with 2 shots of espresso sweetened with apple crisp syrup. Finish with whipped cream or soft top and a light caramel drizzle for added indulgence.

Is the iced apple crisp oat milk shaken espresso a seasonal menu item?

Yes. This drink is featured on the Starbucks fall menu. But you can recreate the drink at home anytime by following the simple recipe above!

Does the iced apple crisp oat milk shaken espresso have caffeine?

The traditional Starbucks version does have caffeine. But you can order it half caffeinated or even decaffeinated.

How much sugar does an iced apple crisp oat milk shaken espresso contain?

The sugar content of the grande size of the coffee shop version contains around 20 grams of sugar. This is less than popular drinks featuring pumpkin spice syrup, with an average sugar content of approximately 50 grams.

And by making your own version at home, you can reduce the amount of added sugar even further.

Can you use store bought apple syrup to make this drink?

Absolutely! Although I’ve not personally tried the brand, Monin makes an apple syrup that has gotten great reviews.

    Final Thoughts

If you’ve been searching for a signature fall drink that doesn’t feature a strong coffee taste and has nothing to do with pumpkin spice, then the iced apple crisp shaken espresso is a great option for you!

The drink comes together quickly, especially with premade apple-flavored syrup and instant coffee.

It’s a modern take on all those traditional fall flavors that will quickly become your new go-to drink this season.

What is an Iced Pumpkin Latte?

Iced lattes feature the same flavor as the hot version but are generally served over ice.

In this case, the iced latte bursts with pumpkin flavor and a hint of coffee.

It’s essentially a slice of pumpkin pie in a glass.

As with many delicious coffee drinks, the coffee shop version was debuted by Starbucks 20 years ago.

And since then, pumpkin spice has been a featured flavor of the fall season.

What’s in an Iced Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte?

You’ll only need a few simple ingredients to create your own version of an iced pumpkin spice latte.

    Coffee

Most coffee shops use a couple shots of espresso in this drink, but you have several options when creating your version at home.

Choose the option that’s most convenient for you, depending on what type of coffee machine you have and the amount of time you want to spend on the recipe.

One of the easiest ways to infuse coffee flavor into the drink is using strong brewed coffee.

Making slightly more coffee than you need in the morning and saving the leftovers for when you want to make the recipe is an effortless way to make the recipe.

You can also use either homemade or store-bought cold brew coffee.

My favorite way is to brew a batch of strong coffee from a French press. Once it’s cooled, I simply add the cold coffee to the drink.

If you have an espresso machine, add a shot of espresso to the drink for an authentic coffee house flavor.

And if you’re making this drink for your kids, feel free to skip the coffee entirely, and you’ll instead have a cup of pumpkin spice milk!

Although it can be served cold, pumpkin spice milk is best served warm in your kids’ favorite mug.

    Milk

One of the best things about making your own custom drinks at home is that you can use your choice of milk.

Whether you choose dairy-free milk or skim milk, anything goes with this recipe component.

You can even make your own cold foam!

My preference for this recipe is non-dairy milk, specifically oat milk.

I’ve found that oat milk gives this drink the best body and consistency.

If you want less consistency, try unsweetened almond milk.

Using soy milk adds a nutty flavor to the drink and more consistency than almond milk.

But whole milk would also give the drink a thicker consistency, so it’s an excellent option if you have no reason to avoid cow’s milk.

    Pumpkin Flavor

This cold pumpkin spice latte gets its flavor from real pumpkin puree.

I prefer to buy the plain puree and make my own homemade pumpkin pie spice, but you can certainly try the canned version with spice already added.

And if pumpkins are in season, you can also make your own free pumpkin puree, although I find that too much work for the amount needed in this recipe.

Store the leftover pumpkin puree in the fridge for up to 3 days, or use it in other pumpkin recipes.

    Spices

You can use several different spice variations, but my favorite is cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.

Ginger has hormone-balancing properties, which make it my choice for this recipe.

However, you can opt for nutmeg instead of ginger.

Using the ground version of these spices is easiest; however, you can use fresh grated ginger if you have it.

If using fresh, grate a very small amount into the blender when making the drink.

And if you’re using ground cinnamon and cloves, mix in the same ratio as indicated below, but add slightly less than 1/2 teaspoon of the mixture per drink.

Spices don’t always mix well into drinks, thus the reason why I suggest making a larger batch of the spice combination and adding a small amount to each glass.

The pumpkin puree in this drink tends to bind the spices, so you’re not left with the sludge at the bottom of the glass as you would with other drinks.

And you always have the option to strain the drink through cheesecloth if you want to avoid the sludge.

    Sweetener

The chain store drinks are very sweet, with about as much sugar per serving as a can of pop.

I’m always looking for ways to decrease my daily sugar intake, which is why this recipe has significantly less than the coffee shop version.

Feel free to experiment with the sweetness to find your perfect balance of sweet and savory.

Options for adding a bit of sugar include pure maple syrup, honey, or simple syrup.

You can also buy pumpkin spice coffee syrup; however, if you opt for this version, you should back off on the spices as they likely already have those flavors added.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say summer was my favorite season.

What is a Pumpkin Spice Latte?

This fall favorite is essentially pumpkin pie in drink form.

It has a kick of caffeine from hot espresso and is one of the best ways to stay warm on a chilly fall day!

The original is served with a little whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Starbucks pumpkin spice latte launched the cascade of pumpkin spice products enjoyed by consumers over the past 20 years.

Although I won’t argue that pumpkin spice makes a delectable hand soap scent, I’m not sure we need pumpkin spice-scented beard oil, dog shampoo, or pumpkin spice-flavored Twinkies.

Regardless of your thoughts on the pumpkin spice craze, let’s break down what’s in a DIY pumpkin spice latte.

What’s in a Pumpkin Spice Latte?

There are only a few essential components to this iconic fall drink.

    Milk

The original pumpkin latte features 2% milk, but feel free to use whatever kind of milk you have in your fridge.

As I am lactose-intolerant, I generally opt for oat milk because I have found that it forms the creamiest, most stable froth.

Unsweetened almond milk is another viable option. This type of milk will add a slightly nutty flavor that pairs well with pumpkin spice beverages.

If you’re cutting back on calories, try skim milk. Skim milk also froths pretty well, an added bonus.

You can also use whole milk if you want more body and substance to the drink.

One of the best aspects of recreating coffee shop drinks at home is that you have complete control of what goes in your drink!

    Strongly-Brewed Coffee

Most coffee chains add espresso shots to the drink but feel free to try your preferred way of making coffee.

A French press works great for custom drinks because you can easily brew a slightly stronger cup simply by adding more grounds than your usual cup of joe.

You can also use a regular coffee maker by following the same principle of adding slightly more grounds.

Brewing a shot of espresso with a Keurig or similar machine is another great way to infuse a touch of caffeine into the drink.

If you have an espresso machine, feel free to use it to pull a couple shots of espresso for a more authentic latte flavor.

You can also consider decaf coffee if you’re avoiding caffeine.

But honestly, the original does not have a robust coffee flavor, so feel free to skip this ingredient altogether if you want.

    Pumpkin Flavor

The coffee shop version gets its flavor from pumpkin spice syrup, a sugary concoction of artificial flavors and sweeteners.

But you can recreate this flavor at home by adding pumpkin pie flavoring and the sweetener of your choice.

If you’re feeling incredibly ambitious, try using real pumpkin puree!

Popular sweetener options for this drink include a homemade simple syrup made with cane sugar and water.

Using brown sugar for the simple syrup will give the drink a slightly caramelized flavor.

You can also use a touch of maple syrup or honey to sweeten this drink, as either option will complement the pumpkin flavor nicely.

    Spices

And, of course, what’s a homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe without the warm and comforting flavors of a few spices?

My favorite ones to add to this particular recipe are cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, but feel free to add a bit of nutmeg if you like.

Turmeric also adds a slightly different flavor to the drink.

Using real spices may also give you a boost of added health benefits such as improved blood sugar control, hormone regulation, and cancer-fighting antioxidants.

It’s another reason to opt for your version at home over the coffee shop ones!

    • 2 tsp ground cloves
    • 1/4 cup strongly brewed coffee or 1-2 shots espresso
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1-3 tsp honey, maple syrup, or homemade simple syrup sweeten to taste

    • Pour into the mug of your choice, top with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get a pumpkin spice latte year-round at most coffee shops?

Nope. It’s a seasonal drink, so you can only find this delightful beverage at most coffee shops in the fall.

Can you buy pumpkin-flavored coffee syrup?

Yes, you can find this flavor of coffee syrup on Amazon. A few different brands are available, and you can even find a sugar-free version.

    , ,

How do you make a pumpkin spice latte with flavored syrup instead of pumpkin pie filling?

Add milk, a couple of pumps of pumpkin spice-flavored syrup, and espresso or strongly brewed coffee to a small saucepan. Heat to your desired temperature, and once hot, pour into your favorite mug.

Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy!

If there’s not enough “spice” flavor, you can always add some as directed above however you will probably want to strain the drink to eliminate spicy sludge from the bottom of your mug.

Adding real pumpkin puree helps eliminate the stray spices from the drink so when making it as suggested above, you won’t need to strain it.

Can you use a milk frother instead of a blender to make a pumpkin spice latte?

Yes! Either a handheld or a stand-alone frother works great for this recipe. Here’s my favorite frother:

    Is pumpkin healthy for you?

Yes. Pumpkin is an excellent source of fiber. It also has multiple vitamins and minerals to support a healthy immune system and fight off chronic diseases.

Pumpkin is nutrient-dense with a high water content, making it ideal for people who want to lose weight.

How much sugar is in a pumpkin spice latte?

A 12-ounce pumpkin spice latte has around 38 grams of sugar. That’s a comparable amount of sugar to a can of Pepsi.

And as the sizes get bigger, so does the total amount of added sugar. A 16-ounce size has 50 grams of sugar, while the 20-ounce boasts a whopping 63 grams.

For comparison, current health guidelines say women should stick to 24 grams or less of sugar daily. In contrast, men are limited to 36 grams.

Even a small pumpkin spice latte from your local coffee shop puts you over the daily sugar intake limit.

But by making your own drink at home, you can significantly decrease the amount of added sugar without any sacrifice in flavor.

When making the above recipe, I add only 1 teaspoon of honey and find it balances well with the other flavors in the drink.

The drink ends up neither too sweet nor too bitter, but is just right!

    Final Thoughts

The next time you’re craving a little fall flavor, give this homemade pumpkin spice latte a try!

One of the most fun aspects about the homemade version is that by making it with natural ingredients, such as pumpkin and cinnamon, you’re getting some of the added health benefits of these superfoods.

Although it takes a bit more time than ordering it from your local drive-thru, I promise the extra time will be worth it in the end!

Another great thing about making custom coffeehouse-inspired drinks at home is that you have total control over the ingredients.

This means avoiding artificial colors and flavoring and sticking to the good stuff found in fresh ingredients.

You can also significantly reduce your sugar intake by adding WAY less sugar than most coffee shops add to their drinks.

And there isn’t anyone out there who can argue about saving money or empty calories.

What is a Golden Milk Latte?

A golden milk latte, also known as a “turmeric latte,” is a warm and soothing beverage that has gained popularity recently, particularly in wellness and health-conscious communities.

It’s made by combining milk (dairy or plant-based) with various spices, with the key ingredient being turmeric.

Golden milk lattes are often touted for their potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and support for digestion.

However, it’s important to note that while the individual ingredients in the drink have various health-promoting properties, the overall benefits may be limited and vary from person to person.

Whether you’re drawn to it for its potential health benefits or its unique and comforting flavors, a Golden Milk Latte can be a delicious addition to your beverage repertoire!

What’s in a Golden Milk Latte?

Golden milk turmeric lattes have several key ingredients, most of which are most likely already stocked in your kitchen.

    Milk

Feel free to use whatever type of milk you have in your fridge. This drink’s reputation as a comforting elixir is partially due to its creamy texture.

And using whole milk or even creamy oat milk will give your golden turmeric milk latte that type of texture, especially if you use a milk frother.

Depending on your taste preferences and dietary restrictions, dairy or plant-based milk works well in this recipe.

If you’re looking for inspiration, try one of the following non-dairy milk options in this drink:

    • Coconut milk: Adds a slightly tropical flavor to the latte.
    • Cashew milk: Adds a nutty flavor to the drink.
    • Soy milk: Adds a slightly nutty flavor to the latte.
    • Unsweetened almond milk: Choose the unsweetened version to limit excess sugar in the drink.

    Spices

The unique blend of spices is what really puts this drink over the top.

And similar to chai, there is some variety in the spices used in this drink.

The most common warming spices used in this delicious drink include ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and a pinch of black pepper. Nutmeg or cardamom are sometimes also added.

Feel free to experiment with the flavor profile you find most appealing.

You can use either turmeric powder or turmeric paste, depending on what you have on hand.

And either fresh ginger or ground ginger works in this recipe.

Regardless of whether you use the fresh or dried forms of the various spices, you will want to strain the drink before consuming it to remove any large pieces.

    Sweetener

Most recipes include a hint of sweetness in this warm golden milk drink.

Maple syrup adds a unique flavor profile to the underlying spices.

Raw honey is another good option for adding a bit of sweetness to the drink.

You can also use a homemade simple syrup made with cane sugar or commercial coffee syrup.

When using homemade simple syrup, I also like to add a touch of caramel or vanilla extract to complement the other flavors in this warm beverage.

    Golden Milk Latte (Turmeric Latte)

A tantalizing blend of nourishing spices, milk, and caramel flavoring.
    Prep Time 5 minutes
    Cook Time 10 minutes
    Servings 1 person

    Ingredients

    • 1 tbsp ground turmeric
    • 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
    • 2 tsp ground ginger
    • 1 tsp cardamom
    • pinch lemon pepper
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 tsp honey
    • 1/2 tsp caramel extract

    Instructions

    • Combine the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom in a small bowl.
    • Combine 1/2 teaspoon of the spice mix and the remainder of the ingredients in a small saucepan. Store the remainder of the spice mix in an airtight container for future use.
    • Heat the ingredients over medium heat until slightly warmer than your preferred drinking temperature.
    • If you don’t want a “spice sludge” at the bottom of your cup, I highly recommend straining the mixture through a strainer with multiple layers of cheesecloth. Strain twice to remove the spices.
    • Optional: Run the liquid through the blender (or a milk frother) for 1-2 minutes to give the drink extra body. Pour into your favorite mug, top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is golden milk tea the same thing as a golden milk latte?

Yes. The drink is the same but goes by several different names.

Can you substitute a cinnamon stick for ground cinnamon in a golden milk latte?

Absolutely. Don’t add the stick to the blender if you choose to use a cinnamon stick instead of the ground version.

Add the cinnamon stick to the saucepan, and the cinnamon flavor will infuse beautifully into the drink.

Remove the cinnamon stick before drinking.

Can you substitute fresh ginger for ground ginger in a golden milk latte?

Yes. You can either finely mince a small piece of fresh ginger and add it to the blender or put a chunk into the saucepan and allow its flavor to infuse into the drink.

Adding the piece of ginger to the saucepan will give the drink a more subtle flavor than adding either the ground or minced version.

Strain before drinking to remove any lingering pieces of ginger.

Can you use fresh turmeric root in a turmeric milk recipe?

Yes. Use it as you would the fresh ginger and add it to the blender or lightly infuse via heat into the drink.

Infusing it into your drink may leave you with a less vibrant final drink color than adding it via the ground or minced forms.

What are the health benefits of turmeric?

Turmeric contains an antioxidant called curcumin, which helps alleviate chronic inflammation. On a larger scale, it can help reduce the risk of cardiac disease and even some types of cancer.

It also has pain-relieving properties and, when taken in small, daily doses, can help soothe digestive distress.

There is even limited research out there suggesting that turmeric can protect brain function, but more data is needed to make a definitive statement.

And when thinking about taking any nutritional or dietary supplement, it’s always best to consult your primary care provider to avoid dangerous interactions or side effects.

Are there side effects of eating too much turmeric?

Although turmeric can relieve some gastric distress in lower doses, taking too much can cause bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Limiting your daily intake to one teaspoon or less of turmeric reduces your risk of stomach issues caused by overeating turmeric.

Why should you add black pepper to your turmeric tea?

There is a compound in black pepper that activates the antioxidant properties of turmeric. Adding just a hint of black pepper helps ensure you get all those fantastic health benefits of the spice.

Why do some recipes for turmeric milk tea include coconut oil?

Turmeric milk tea traditionally has a fat component added. The fat helps release the antioxidant properties of turmeric and unleashes its full health benefits.

Using whole-fat milk is another excellent way to release the antioxidant properties if you don’t have coconut oil or don’t enjoy the taste.

    Final Thoughts

Whether you’re searching for a morning pick-me-up or a late afternoon closer, the golden milk latte just might fit the bill.

Its timeless, soothing qualities have long made it a favorite health elixir for boosting the immune system and relieving joint pain.

And it’s a delicious drink that can quickly be whipped up at any time of the day.

Give it a try today, and let me know what you think in the comments below.

8 Surprising Benefits of French Press Coffee Brewing

Are you looking for a simpler way to brew coffee? Maybe you love a flavorful cup of coffee but hate the complicated cleaning processes required for a drip coffee maker.

Or perhaps you’re simply looking for that perfect cup of coffee at home.

Regardless of why you’re exploring different brewing methods, it’s time to seriously consider the French press.

Today’s post dives into the world of the French press, giving coffee lovers everywhere a compelling reason to switch.

    What is a French press?

A French press is a simple and popular method of brewing coffee. It’s a manual coffee maker that allows you to steep coffee grounds in hot water and then separate the grounds from the brewed coffee using a plunger-like mechanism.

    Here’s how it works:

Basic Components: A typical French press consists of three main parts:

    • Carafe: A glass, plastic, or metal container with a handle where the coffee is brewed and served.
    • Lid: Usually made of plastic or metal, it fits snugly on the carafe.
    • Plunger Assembly: Comprising a metal or nylon mesh filter and a rod with a flat circular base that fits inside the carafe.

    Adding Coffee Grounds:

    • Start by coarsely grinding coffee beans (you can also buy pre-ground coffee, but coarse grinds are essential for the French press).
    • Remove the lid and the plunger assembly from the carafe.
    • Add the desired amount of coffee grounds to the carafe.

    Brewing:

    • Heat water to just below boiling (around 200-205°F or 93-96°C). Freshly boiled water is too hot and can scorch the coffee, resulting in a bitter taste.
    • Pour the hot water into the carafe over the coffee grounds. Make sure to saturate all the grounds.

    Steeping:

    • Place the lid on the carafe, but do not press down the plunger.
    • Let the coffee steep for about 4 to 5 minutes. The steeping time can be adjusted based on your desired strength.

    Pressing the Plunger:

    • After the coffee has steeped, it’s time to separate the grounds from the coffee.
    • Hold the carafe handle firmly and slowly press down the plunger. The mesh filter will push the coffee grounds to the bottom, leaving the brewed coffee on top.

    Pouring and Serving:

    • The coffee is ready to be served once the plunger is fully pressed down.
    • Pour the brewed coffee into your cup or mug and enjoy!

The French press is loved for its simplicity and ability to retain the coffee’s natural oils and flavors, producing a robust and full-bodied cup of coffee.

    Benefits of French Press Coffee

Hailed by coffee enthusiasts everywhere as the ultimate aromatic cup of coffee, I discovered this brewing method about a year ago.

At the time, I was frustrated with the bitter taste of the coffee coming from my regular coffee maker.

And to be clear, I was using a very cheap coffee maker that was approximately 4 years old.

It was, by no means, a top-of-the-line machine.

But still, I wanted a way to make great coffee at home without spending extra time cleaning the machine, only to have the coffee come out bitter.

On a whim, I purchased a French press and haven’t looked back since!

I absolutely adore my French press and will never switch back.

Here are a few reasons why I love this brewing method and why you should also consider switching.

    1. Eco-Friendly

One of the best features of using a French press coffee maker is that it’s eco-friendly. There are no K-cup pods to dispose of. Nor do you need a paper filter.

    It’s just water and coffee.

And once you’re done brewing, your morning coffee grounds make exceptional composting material

    2. Budget Friendly

Another appealing aspect of using the French press method is that no recurring equipment costs are associated with it. You don’t need to buy pods or even paper filters.

All you need is a supply of your favorite grind to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee!

French presses often also have a cheaper upfront cost than other types of coffee machines, so it’s a win-win!

    3. Pure Taste

When I used a standard drip machine, I loved the taste of coffee from a brand-new machine. But as the device aged, the flavor of the coffee changed.

This was especially true after the first time cleaning the machine with vinegar.

After that, the coffee tasted slightly bitter, even after thorough rinses.

With the French press, you can easily pop it in the dishwasher after each use. There’s no need to soak it in vinegar or rinse it multiple times to remove the residue.

Every brew is as fresh as the first!

    4. Ease of Use

The French press has no complicated buttons or mechanical parts that can break.

It’s simply a container with a fine strainer to separate the coffee grounds from your brew.

And all you need to do is heat the water, combine it with the raw grounds in the French press, wait a few minutes, and strain the grounds.

    It couldn’t be any easier!

And did I mention that most models are dishwasher-safe?

    5. Easily Customize Your Brew

Do you like a full-bodied flavor? Or maybe you prefer a lighter brew.

Regardless of how you prefer your morning cup of joe, you can easily adjust the brewing process to yield your perfect cup.

Allowing the grounds and water a longer brewing time results in a strong coffee flavor. In comparison, less time gives you a slightly lighter taste.

You can also adjust the coffee grounds to water ratio to give you greater control over the strength of your final brew.

French press coffee is celebrated for its smooth, pure flavor, but remember to avoid boiling the water before adding to the grounds, as doing so will infuse a bitter flavor into the coffee.

    6. Brew Anywhere

A French press makes a great travel companion.

It requires zero electricity, and as long as you can heat water, you can enjoy your morning bliss anywhere!

    7. Antioxidants

Coffee has many health benefits, partially thanks to its supply of antioxidants which counteract oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals.

One of the features of French press coffee that I noticed almost immediately was the oily substances on the coffee’s surface.

And it’s in the coffee oils where those amazing health benefits can be found, most notably in French press coffee because of its basic filtering process.

Although the medical world doesn’t completely understand how this works, recent studies have shown that the antioxidants in coffee can minimize potential health risks.

Those antioxidants have been shown to protect against the cognitive decline associated with aging as well as against Parkinson’s disease.

Evidence suggests it protects against cardiovascular disease and reduces cholesterol levels; however, remember that caffeine can cause issues such as heart palpitations when consumed in excess.

Regular consumption of coffee can also reduce the risk of certain cancers, including esophageal cancers.

    8. Save Counter Space

Although I adore an espresso-based drink, I don’t love how much counter space the espresso maker occupies.

Over the last few years, it does seem as if the trend is coffee machines that don’t take up the entire counter.

But competing with something as portable and light as a French press is still tricky.

You can stash the French press almost anywhere, thanks to its diminutive size. Store it in your cupboard. Or with your pots and pans.

Regardless of where you decide to keep it, rest assured that you can quickly move it should the need arise.

And you certainly won’t need to rearrange your entire kitchen around it as you would with other coffee makers on the market today.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does French press coffee contain caffeine?

If you use caffeinated grounds, then coffee made in a French press will be caffeinated.

Although many factors influence caffeine content, French press coffee generally has slightly less caffeine than a standard drip machine.

Use decaffeinated grounds if you want to avoid caffeine.

Can you put a French press in the dishwasher?

Check the specific manufacturer’s instructions for your model, but most models are dishwasher-safe.

Should you use a coarse or fine grind in a French press?

Coarse is better when it comes to the French press. A coarse grind is best for maximum coffee extraction and flavor.

The optimum grind should look like coarse sea salt.

And if you don’t have a grinder at home, you can have the coffee ground for you in many different retail locations.

You can also buy pre-ground coffee that will work in a French press.

I love flavored coffee, and although I’ve tried many different brands, Starbucks continues to be my favorite for the French press.

    , ,

    Final Thoughts

From the budget and eco-friendly features to the cleaning convenience, the French press has much to offer coffee lovers!

Although a French press can seem mysterious and intimidating, it’s one of the most basic brewing methods.

And it’s the one that produces the most flavorful, antioxidant-rich cup of coffee you’ll ever drink!

So, if you’re ready to make the switch, here are a few of my favorite models.

What is the Dunkin’ Iced Chai Latte?

The Dunkin’ Donuts chai latte is a popular drink with a mix of spices, including cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg.

Flavored with chai concentrate syrup, the Dunkin’ chai latte blends black tea flavors and milk.

The iced version is, as you would expect, served over ice.

What’s in a Dunkin’ Chai Latte?

You can easily recreate this drink at home with a few simple ingredients.

    Black Tea

Coffee shops differ when it comes to the black tea flavor that forms the foundation of this drink. Many coffee houses use an all-in-one mix that includes spices and black tea together but allows the customization of milk.

And some homemade chai mixes call for Lipton iced tea powder to give the mixture the tea flavor.

My preference is decaffeinated, freshly brewed black tea.

Feel free to use the fully caffeinated version of this drink if caffeine isn’t an issue for you.

You can add powdered iced tea to the spice mix if it is more convenient. When using sweetened tea, you may need to back off on the extra sugar you add to avoid an overly sweet drink.

    , ,

    Chai Spices

Traditional chai is made with a blend of different spices, which may include black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.

I’m not a fan of the black pepper flavor; feel free to add it if you like a bite to your chai.

And I generally add less cardamom and cloves to my mix because I otherwise find the mixture too bold for my taste.

But the beauty of making this recipe at home is that you can customize for however you like it!

    Sugar

When it comes to adding a hint of sweetness to this drink, you also have options.

Brown or cane sugar will add a hint of caramel flavor.

White sugar tends to dissolve the best in hot water, so I generally add the mix while the tea is steeping and then strain the mixture over ice to remove the spices.

You can also sweeten this drink with honey or add a bit of homemade simple syrup.

Maple syrup is another option that would give a slightly caramel flavor to the final drink.

And if you’re cutting down on sugar, try Stevia.

    Milk

Almond or even whole milk works well in this drink. The creamier the milk, the creamier the final product.

If you like more body to the drink, you can froth the milk before adding it. A countertop or handheld frother works exceptionally well for drink recipes like this one.

Other types of milk that work well in this drink include:

    • Skim milk
    • Oat milk
    • Non-dairy milk, such as the Lactaid brand
    • Half-and-half is another option that would give you a full-bodied experience

    Copycat Dunkin’ Iced Chai Latte

A little sweet, a little spice, and a lot of refreshing flavor!
    Prep Time 15 minutes
    Cook Time 10 minutes

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup white sugar
    • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
    • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
    • 1 black tea bag
    • 1/4 cup boiling water
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • ice

    Instructions

    • Boil water for the tea.
    • While the water is boiling, combine the sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg in a bowl. If you have a spice grinder, run the mixture through it to get a fine powder.
    • Once the water is hot, add 1 tablespoon of the dry mixture and stir.
    • Add the tea bag and steep the tea for 4-6 minutes, removing the tea bag once the time has elapsed.
    • While the tea is steeping, you have the option of running the milk through a milk frother if you want a creamier texture. You certainly don’t have to do this step if you are fine with a thinner consistency.
    • Add ice to the glass of your choice.
    • Pour the tea mixture through a strainer and into the glass with ice if you did not previously run the spice mixture through a grinder to avoid “sludge” at the bottom of your glass.
    • Top with whipped cream or soft top and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is an iced chai a seasonal drink?

No. Although there are different flavor additives, such as a pumpkin spice latte, that may have seasonal availability, you can order either the iced or hot version of the chai latte any time of year.

Does the Dunkin Chai Latte have caffeine?

Yes. But most chai lattes don’t contain the high caffeine content of coffee-based drinks.

According to the caffeine information on their website, the small size from Dunkin’, a 16-ounce drink, contains 70 mg of caffeine. This is less caffeine than a small iced coffee which contains 198 milligrams of caffeine.

If you want to reduce your daily caffeine intake, swapping out an iced coffee for an iced chai might be a good choice.

And if you want to cut the caffeine entirely and put your own spin on the drink, make your own version at home with decaffeinated black tea.

Is a chai latté healthy for you?

Whether hot or iced, chai does offer mood and hormone-supporting antioxidants.

The downside is that when you get one from coffee shops, they pack a punch in the sugar department, which negates their other benefits.

For example, a medium iced chai from Dunkin’ has 40 grams of sugar. A medium iced caramel craze latte has 57 grams of sugar.

In comparison, a 12-ounce can of Mountain Dew contains around 54 grams of sugar.

    Yikes.

One of the most straightforward solutions is to make the drink yourself at home and either swap out the sugar for Stevia or simply add less sugar.

Although slightly more work, the upside of making your own drinks at home is complete control over all the ingredients.

Can you add other flavors to an iced chai?

Absolutely! Vanilla is a great option, as is caramel. Raspberry is another flavor that blends well with the underlying flavors of the chai, as does white chocolate.

Play around with different flavor combinations until you find one you love!

Can you buy premade chai mix?

Yes. My favorite is the Oregon Chai liquid mix. Buying the premade mix simplifies the recipe preparation, although it gives you less control over the final product.

The premade version also contains preservatives and other additives that you may find unappealing.

You can find the premade version on Amazon and at most large grocery stores.

    Final Thoughts

The iced chai is a timeless classic regardless of how you make it. Packed with phytonutrients and plenty of feel-good flavors, this drink is one of my all-time favorites!

And by mixing up a batch ahead of time, you can quickly whip one out when the weather turns sultry.

Remember that buying the premixed version is also an option, making this recipe a breeze!

I’ve even found that the decaffeinated version is one of the best ways to wind down after a long day.

How to Make a Copycat Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles

It’s summer here in the Midwest, which means sun, heat, and humidity.

And this summer has, thus far, been hotter than usual.

Although I love iced lattes and cold brew, sometimes I crave something a little different.

Something with a hint of sweetness, a kick of caffeine, and a unique texture.

If you, too, are craving a unique and refreshing summer drink, it’s time for you to check out the epic raspberry green tea with bubbles!

In this post, I’ll give you all the insider information you need to successfully recreate this drink at home.

We’ll cover the basic ingredients, alternative ingredient ideas, and why you should try your hand at becoming a home barista.

    Let’s get to it!

Warning: Mixed-texture drinks pose a choking hazard. Please closely supervise children who are consuming this beverage.

What is the Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles?

The raspberry green tea with bubbles is a staple of the Caribou Coffee menu during the summer, and the return of bubbles heralds the start of the best part of the year!

This fan favorite drink is an exhilarating blend of creamy raspberry green tea and sweet, coconut coffee-flavored jellies.

This drink is the type of treat that requires both a straw and a spoon to enjoy!

And thanks to the coffee-flavored “bubbles,” coffee drinkers can still quench their thirst for hot bean water.

What’s in a Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles?

Although this recipe is slightly more involved than other copycat recipes off the Caribou menu, it’s so worth it!

And the simple ingredients are easy to find at your local grocery store.

    Green Tea

Both green and black teas offer various health benefits, including antioxidants and hormone-balancing properties.

And although this recipe makes use of green tea, it would also be tasty with black tea.

Green tea is naturally caffeinated, so choose a decaf blend if you’re trying to cut back on caffeine.

My favorite tea brand is The Republic of Tea, but feel free to use whatever is your preference.

Although I haven’t tried it this way, you can also buy Crystal Light or Lipton raspberry green tea powders that would eliminate the need to create your own tea.

    Milk

Feel free to use whatever type of milk you have on hand. My preference is a plant-based alternative, namely, oat milk.

But you can use almond milk, coconut milk, or even low-fat milk of the dairy variety.

If you like a thicker mouthfeel, try 2% or even whole milk.

Again, I’ve found oat milk to be the best substitute for the creamy texture of full-fat dairy milk in most copycat versions of my favorite drinks.

    Raspberry Syrup

There are several ways to infuse bold raspberry flavor into this drink.

The first is by using raspberry flavor syrup. My favorite brand is DaVinci, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand.

If you want to eliminate additives in this drink, you can make your own raspberry flavored simple syrup.

Combine 1/2 cup cane sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 1/4 cup fresh fruit, in this case, raspberries, in a small saucepan. Heat until the sugar dissolves, and pour through a strainer to remove the raspberry seeds.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

You can also make a basic simple syrup recipe and add a hint of raspberry extract once it has cooled.

    Coconut Coffee Bubbles

And now for the really fun part of this recipe …. the flavored bubbles!

I use a combination of unflavored gelatin (or agar agar if you’re vegan), sugar, coconut extract, and cold brew coffee.

You can substitute strongly brewed drip coffee or espresso; however, I have found that cold brew has the best flavor profile for this recipe.

And feel free to skip the coconut flavoring per your personal preference.

Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles (Caribou Copycat)

Sweet with a hint of raspberry and hit of coconut coffee flavors
    Servings 1 person

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup cane sugar for the homemade raspberry syrup
    • 1/2 cup water for the homemade raspberry syrup
    • 1/4 cup fresh raspberries for the homemade raspberry syrup
    • 3/4 cup hot water for the bubbles
    • 1/4 cup white sugar for the bubbles
    • 1/4 cup cold brew coffee for the bubbles
    • 1 packet unflavored gelatin for the bubbles
    • 1/2 tsp coconut extract for the bubbles
    • 3/4 cup warm water for the green tea
    • 1 bag green tea for the green tea
    • 1/8 cup milk for the final drink
    • ice
    • 3 tbsp raspberry syrup homemade or purchased

    Instructions

    • Combine the cane sugar, water, and raspberries in a small saucepan and smash the raspberries.
    • Heat the mixture over medium heat just until the sugar dissolves and then turn the heat down to low and simmer for 10 minutes to infuse the raspberry flavor into the syrup.
    • Pour the mixture through a strainer to remove the seeds and allow to cool. Store in an airtight container in the fridge and use within 1 week.
    • Combine the packet of gelatin, cold brew, white sugar and coconut extract in a bowl. Add the boiling water and gently stir for 4 minutes. Put the mixture in an 8×8 pan in the fridge and chill for at least 3 hours before cutting.
    • Once the gelatin has set, cut it into squares approximately 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. Put 3 spoonfuls of bubbles into the bottom of a 10 ounce glass and fill with ice.
    • Pour the warm water over the green tea bag and allow to steep for 3 minutes. Remove the tea bag.
    • Combine 1/2 cup tea and the milk, along with 3 teaspoons of raspberry syrup (more or less to taste) and stir.
    • Pour the raspberry green tea over the ice, add a spoon and straw, and enjoy!

Note: Depending upon how many bubbles you add per drink, the recipe makes enough bubbles for 4+ drinks.

The raspberry syrup also makes a decently sized batch, so you will have enough for several other drinks.

This recipe was developed for a 10 ounce glass, so you may need to adjust slightly for a larger-sized glass.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles a Bubble Tea Recipe?

No. Bubble tea is fruit-flavored tea mixed with milk and containing boba pearls. This tea-based drink contains black tapioca pearls made from tapioca flour rather than gelatin.

Either is a fun drink to enjoy on a hot summer day!

    What are Boba Tapioca Pearls?

Boba is those little round chewy tapioca pearls found in bubble tea. They’re made from tapioca starch and are naturally white.

Food coloring or brown sugar is often added to give them the characteristic black color.

Boba is made by combining tapioca flour and water into a dough which is then boiled.

It’s sometimes heated in caramel syrup to add flavor; otherwise, on their own, boba is more about adding texture than flavor to boba tea drinks.

Is Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles Vegan-Friendly?

You can substitute plant-based milk, such as soy milk, and agar agar for the gelatin to make this refreshing drink recipe vegan-friendly.

Does a Raspberry Green Tea with Bubbles have Caffeine?

Green tea is naturally caffeinated, so the drink you get at Caribou will have caffeine. One of the perks of becoming a home barista is the ability to completely customize your brew.

In this case, you can swap the regular for decaf green tea. Don’t forget to use decaf coffee for the bubbles!

Check out The Republic of Tea and Bizzy Cold Brew if you need decaf recommendations.

    ,

What’s the best way to serve this drink?

Caribou offers huge straws to drink their version; however, I have mixed feelings about that due to choking hazards.

I suggest serving this drink in a tall glass and offering both a spoon and a straw.

Use the straw on the refreshing green tea and the spoon on the bubbles!

The drink is sweet enough to be considered dessert, so it’s a great way to top off a nice dinner.

Can you adapt this recipe for different flavors?

Absolutely! Using different fruit syrups, you can make a peach, strawberry, or even mango-flavored drink.

    Final Thoughts

Making custom coffee shop drinks at home is not only fun, but it saves so much money!

Granted, specific recipes take slightly more time than others, but completely controlling the ingredients is worth it in the end.

The Best Cold Brew Container for Home Brewing in 2023

Summer is finally here: hot days and long nights watching your kids play baseball. Or is that just me?

You need a quick and easy way to get your caffeine fix without spending hours in the kitchen or in the drive-thru of your local coffee shop.

Although I love an espresso-based drink as much as the next person, these drinks can be time-consuming to make.

Luckily, there’s an alternative to espresso for many drinks: cold brew!

In this post, we will explore the ins and outs of cold brew, and I will give you my top pick for the best cold-brew coffee maker for busy people.

    What is Cold Brew Coffee?

Cold brew coffee has risen in popularity over the past few years.

And in case you’ve never heard of it, it’s simply coffee brewed at room temperature.

Most other coffee brewing methods rely on hot water for the extraction process.

Although hot coffee is arguably the most popular, brewing can cause issues.

One issue that can arise from using hot water is a bitter flavor.

Since cold brew uses room-temperature water, it has a smoother taste.

A second issue is that you often have to use ice to cool hot coffee or espresso down before adding it to iced drinks.

This can lead to a diluted flavor.

But since cold brew coffee is brewed at or below room temperature, there is no flavor dilution.

In fact, cold brew is generally more concentrated, meaning you will need to dilute it with ice and milk to get the perfect flavor balance.

    Why Cold Brew?

Coffee enthusiasts have embraced cold brewing coffees for several reasons.

    The first is the flavor.

It has a smoother, less bitter taste than regular coffee and espresso.

Many people also feel it’s easier on their stomach than coffee from a drip coffee maker.

Convenience is the second reason the cold brewing process is preferred over traditional brewing methods.

You can brew a batch of homemade cold brew that will last several days rather than having to brew a fresh batch every time you want a cup of great coffee.

Yes, cold brew takes 12+ hours to make, but once it’s made, simply refrigerate and enjoy!

A third reason for cold brew involves coffee concentrate. Cold brew is more concentrated, meaning you must dilute it for the best flavor.

It’s, therefore, ideal for drinks requiring the addition of flavor, milk, and ice because, despite those additions, the coffee flavor will continue shining through!

    How is Cold Brew Made?

Making cold brew concentrate at home couldn’t be easier.

Combine coarse coffee grounds with water and let it sit for at least 12 hours.

Then strain out the grounds, leaving you with delicious cold brew coffee!

    Coffee Beans

You can buy ground coffee that has expressly been made for cold brew.

It’s ground more coarsely than coffee and designed for drip brewing to prevent sludge at the bottom of your cup.

And although you may need to order it online rather than from your local grocery store, you can also buy decaf cold brew grounds.

Any coffee that’s been coarsely ground will make a decent cold brew.

    Water

Filtered water is always recommended for coffee-making purposes. It has a pure taste that helps bring out the flavors of the coffee.

Aim to brew for between 12 and 15 hours.

Too little brew time and your cold brew will be weak, while too much brewing brings out the bitter flavors of the coffee.

While making cold brew, keep the container at room temperature. Once the brew time is complete, pop it in the fridge and use it within 5-7 days.

But with so many fun cold coffee drinks, it won’t last nearly that long in the fridge!

    The Cold-Brew Maker

When it comes to a container for cold brewing, you have several options.

    Mason Jar

The Mason jar method is one of the easiest ways to start your cold brew journey because most people already have one.

Therefore, you only need to invest in cheesecloth and coarsely ground coffee.

And if you want to make your brewing experience even easier, try buying cold brew bags. You can purchase empty filter bags to fill yourself or even pre-filled ones.

Either way, the clean-up process becomes a breeze.

Brewing cold brew in a Mason jar is simple, hassle-free, and the best way to dip your toes in the cold-brewed coffee pool!

    French Press

Another easy way to try home cold brewing is using a French press.

And if you’ve never heard of a French press, it’s time for you to explore a better alternative to a traditional brewing system!

For years, I used a regular coffee machine.

The coffee was always fresh when the machine was new, but when it came time to clean it with vinegar, it would take on a different flavor I was not fond of.

I began exploring different options for brewing and stumbled upon the French press and have never looked back!

My morning cup is always fresh and fully caffeinated. And I love the convenience of daily washing in the dishwasher.

    It couldn’t be simpler!

But when it comes to cold brew, the reusable filter built into the French press is perfect for separating the grounds from the coffee.

Simply combine the water and coffee, allow to sit for 12-15 hours, and push down the plunger once the time has elapsed.

    Easy, fresh, and tasty!

    Cold Brew System Brewing Container

Once you’ve tried making your own cold brew with one of the other methods, chances are good that you’ll want to invest in a dedicated cold brewing system.

I began searching through the best cold brew coffee makers because I use my French press every morning and wanted to avoid constantly tying it up with cold brew.

I also wanted a specific pitcher in which to store my coffee.

After searching far and wide, I eventually found my favorite cold brewer.

This brewer makes the brewing system a snap and lets me keep my French press clear for my morning buzz.

Although many cold brew makers are on the market, let me introduce you to my top pick and what makes it so fantastic!

Primula Burke Deluxe Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker

Let’s talk about what makes this cold brew maker the best on the market!

    Price

I love cold brew, but there was no way that I was willing to spend over $30 on a coffee maker.

After all, part of the reason I wanted to buy a maker in the first place was to cut down on my coffee shop splurging.

So when I began searching for the best model, I immediately eliminated any machine over $30.

And when it comes to price, the machine I found exceeded that expectation, as I spent less than $20 on this model.

If you love spending money on coffee machines, rest assured that there are more expensive models. You can even spend over $100 if that’s your thing.

But it was tough for me to personally justify spending more than $20 on something that can essentially replace a glass jar.

    Convenience of Cleaning

For a new utensil to come into my kitchen, it must pass the dishwasher test.

Putting anything in the dishwasher is theoretically possible, but it doesn’t always end favorably.

And why spend hard-earned money on something you must choose between hand washing or ruining?

Luckily, the Primula Burke model also checked this box.

The glass carafe, as is the reusable filter, is dishwasher safe, so you can easily throw the whole thing on the top rack and forget about it.

    Simple.

    Cold Brew Storage

Ideally, I wanted a cold brew system that would allow me to quickly store my fresh brew without requiring another container.

This particular system allows me to easily remove the grounds when it’s done brewing, put the lid in place, and pop it in the fridge.

And the pitcher is the perfect size to fit in my fridge without being a space hog.

Many of the other models on the market are huge, which increases my frustration level while digging through an already overpacked fridge.

But this particular pitcher’s not-too-big, not-too-small size fits perfectly, allowing me to still find the butter without knocking the jelly on the floor.

    Sleek Design

I’m generally an advocate for function over looks, but this model checks both boxes. Its sleek design lends itself to its overall function.

And it comes in a range of colors from aqua to black to multi-color, enabling most people to find the color that perfectly matches their kitchen decor.

Again, although the overall design was lower on my “must-have list,” it was nice to find a model that appeals to someone more interested in function than appearance.

    Simple to Use

Making cold brew coffee shouldn’t be rocket science. Therefore, I wanted a maker that wouldn’t require a master’s degree to operate.

This pitcher has 3 essential components: the glass carafe, the removable filter, and the lid.

The filter fits nicely into the pitcher’s lid for easy removal once the brew is complete.

This filter also has a cap at the end to allow for convenient emptying of the grounds.

And the lid fits onto the pitcher well whether or not the filter is in place.

    Instructions are Lacking

Like most things in life, the Primula Burke pitcher has a few cons.

One is the notable need for more instructions.

It includes one instruction sheet but gives you a different coffee-to-water ratio on each side of the paper.

But what’s being a home barista if you can’t do a little experimenting?

I’ve had the pitcher for several months and have made each batch with slightly different strengths.

It’s a great cold brew pitcher, and I have very few complaints.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy pre-made cold brew?

Yes! You can buy pre-made cold brew in a couple of different forms.

If you opt for the carton, the cold brew will already be diluted. Simply pour, add sweetener and milk, and enjoy!

You can also buy pods of cold brew concentrate. You must add water to dilute the concentrate for these products before adding milk and sweetener.

The main disadvantage of buying a pre-made cold brew is the cost. You can make your own cold brew for at least half the price of the pre-made stuff.

And you can customize it to whatever flavor you prefer.

    ,

What is the best cold brew coffee?

My current favorite is Bizzy brand cold brew. It has a bold taste that pairs well with flavors such as caramel and vanilla.

Starbucks is always a solid choice.

And if Dunkin’ is your favorite, they also have a cold brew on Amazon.

    ,

Can you use any ground coffee to make cold brew?

Not necessarily. Most commercially ground coffee has a finer grind to accommodate traditional drip brewers. Although ideal for most coffee makers, a fine grind can leave a gritty sludge in your cold brew.

For best results, use coarsely ground coffee when making cold brew.

Can you use a Mason jar to make cold brew?

Absolutely! Combine the coarsely ground coffee and water, then let it sit for 12-15 hours. Use a cheesecloth to strain out the grounds, and enjoy!

Mason jars also make a great storage container for your homemade brew.

Why does the coffee need to be coarsely ground for cold brew?

If the coffee is ground too finely, it will be tough to strain it out of the cold brew, leaving a gritty texture.

Can you buy cold brew packets?

Yes! You can buy pre-made packets that are ready to drop into a pitcher of water or empty ones.

The pre-made packets tend to be more expensive than other brewing methods. Still, they increase convenience and decrease the mess of cold brewing at home.

Can you buy decaf cold brew?

You can buy coarsely ground decaf cold brew or grind your beans to make decaf cold brew.

Either is an excellent option for reducing caffeine consumption and banishing insomnia.

Making your own cold brew at home is the best way to get custom drinks at an affordable price without enduring those impossibly long lines at Starbucks!

What is a Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew?

Like many coffee drinks, the original credit for creating this recipe goes to Starbucks.

And as you may have guessed, the base of this drink is cold brew coffee. Vanilla sweet cream is then swirled in.

Take this drink further by topping it with vanilla sweet cream cold foam drizzled with caramel sauce to give it a hint of caramel flavor.

Are you drooling yet? Because I sure am!

Why Should You Make Your Own Starbucks Copycat Drink at Home?

The best part about making your Starbucks order at home is that you have complete control over the ingredients.

    • Don’t want much sugar in your drink? Only add a little bit of sweetness.
    • Staying away from dairy? Use coconut milk, soy milk, or any of the other non-dairy milks you can buy in grocery stores.
    • Want to customize your drink without ruining the barista’s day? Learn how to easily recreate your coffee shop favorites from your kitchen!

Aside from the ability to customize my drink, I love recreating coffee shop drinks at home because it saves so much money!

You can easily make a customized drink for at least half the cost. Deciding to stop going to Starbucks has been a game-changer for my bank account!

What’s in a Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew?

This drink has three essential components: cold brew coffee, sweet cream vanilla syrup, and sweet cream foam. The drink is traditionally served without the sweetened cold foam, but it’s the perfect way to take this drink over the top!

The caramel drizzle is also an added flavor bonus to this fun drink.

    Cold Brew Coffee

You have several options when it comes to whipping up a batch of cold brew at home.

    Cold Brew Pitcher

This handy device makes the cold brew process a breeze! Simply fill the inner chamber with the coarsely ground coffee of your choice and pour water over the top.

Let it sit for at least 12 hours, and once it’s done, remove the inner chamber of grounds, leaving you with a pitcher of fresh cold brew.

The pitcher method is the easiest way to make cold brew.

My pitcher is dishwasher-safe, so I can easily pop it in and clean it for the next batch.

    French Press

Another relatively simple way to make cold brew is with a French press. Combine the grounds and water and give it a good stir.

Then let it sit for at least 12 hours. Once the time has elapsed, press down on the plunger and pour the cold brew concentrate into a pitcher for storage in the fridge.

Although I have made cold brew with this method, I prefer the pitcher method because it doesn’t tie up my French press, a mandatory part of my morning routine.

I love the convenience of having a pitcher specifically designed for cold brew.

    Mason Jar

The third way to make a batch of cold brew at home involves combining the coffee grounds and water in a Mason jar. Put on the lid and give it a good shake.

Let it sit on the counter for 12 or more hours, and once done, pour the mixture through cheesecloth to strain.

This is an excellent option to avoid investing in a cold brew pitcher or a French press.

It’s the best way to test the cold brew waters to see whether upgrading your brewing equipment is necessary.

But I guarantee that you will become obsessed with trying other cold brew recipes once you make this recipe!

Cold brew is an excellent substitute for espresso in recipes because it has a more robust flavor than regular drip coffee. It’s incredibly versatile, and many people say it’s easier on their stomachs than traditional brew.

If you’ve never tried it, this is your official invitation!

    Vanilla Sweet Cream

There are actually two components to the vanilla sweet cream: milk and vanilla flavor syrup.

    Milk

Other copycat recipes for this drink include a combination of 2% milk and half-and-half. Since I’m lactose-intolerant, I prefer oat milk in my coffee recipes.

I’ve found that certain oat milk brands froth extremely well and mimic the texture of dairy milk.

If you aren’t lactose intolerant, feel free to try using equal parts 2% and half-and-half for a creamier drink.

    Vanilla Flavor Syrup

You can buy Starbucks vanilla syrup on Amazon, but I prefer to whip up a batch myself at home.

Simply combine 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup cane sugar (white sugar also works), and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and remove from heat.

Allow to cool and store the remainder in the fridge for up to one month.

I prefer to make smaller batches of syrup so it stays fresh. And I generally only add the extract once I make the drink. This allows me to rotate between flavors like coconut or caramel.

    Sweet Cream Foam

As I mentioned earlier, this is an optional ingredient for this particular drink, but one that takes it right over the edge of delightful flavors!

And if you’re not familiar with cold foam, it’s relatively simple to make. Similar to cold brew, there are different methods of making it.

    • Milk frother: either handheld or stand-alone
    • Blender
    • Mason jar with lid
    • Hand or stand mixer

Simply combine your choice of milk, a hint of sugar, and flavor extract and froth, blend, or shake, depending on your chosen method of making it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between cold brew and iced coffee?

Cold brew coffee is brewed at room temperature over several hours, resulting in a less acidic and more concentrated brew.

Iced coffee is drip coffee brewed hot and either allowed to cool or poured directly over ice.

Thanks to the difference in brewing methods, cold brew tends to have a less bitter flavor. And because it’s concentrated, it’s helpful in recipes involving the addition of milk and flavor syrups because it doesn’t get that diluted flavor typical of iced coffee.

But if you prefer a more subtle coffee flavor in your drinks, consider opting for iced coffee over cold brew.

Can you use regular ground coffee to make cold brew?

Yes. Choose a coarser grind for your coffee beans when making your own cold brew at home.

Can you make a decaf cold brew?

Several brands make decaf cold brews. My favorite is the Bizzy Cold Brew. It has a slightly sweet, nutty flavor that pairs exceptionally well with the vanilla sweet cream cold brew flavors.

And it doesn’t keep me awake all night!

Can you buy premade cold brew coffee concentrate?

Several brands are on the market, including Starbucks nitro cold brew. Buying cold brew concentrate is a convenient way to get your cold brew fix without the hassle of brewing it yourself.

    Final Thoughts

Cold brew coffee offers so many amazing flavor possibilities! And this recipe can definitely be modified to accommodate other flavors, such as salted caramel cream or even an iced white chocolate mocha.

Whipping up a batch of cold brew at home is simple and opens you up to a whole new world of coffee creativity at home!
