The Best Non-Dairy Homemade Vanilla Oat Nog Latte Recipe

Although the 2024 holiday season has officially ended, I love keeping the holiday spirit alive through my copycat coffee shop recipes!

Today’s recreation comes from Caribou Coffee and is essentially an eggnog latte recipe.

My recreation version of this recipe is based on vegan eggnog and actually contains no eggs.

Despite the lack of egg yolks, this recipe is thick, creamy, and very tasty!

Stick with me as we break down the coffee shop version of this classic holiday drink!

What is the Vanilla Oat Nog Latte?

This drink is a delicious mash-up between traditional eggnog and espresso.

Although you can make an iced version of this drink, I prefer the warm, comforting aromas of cinnamon and ground nutmeg as I wrap my hands around my favorite mug.

This recipe perfectly balances the eggnog and strong coffee flavors, giving you a drink reminiscent of French toast on a Sunday morning.

And thanks to this recipe you can make at home, you don’t even need to take off your robe and slippers to enjoy it!

What’s in a Vanilla Oat Nog Latte?

This drink comes together quickly with a few simple ingredients.

And make note that eggs are not one of the ingredients for this particular recipe!

Oat Milk

I prefer using Planet Oat Extra Creamy Oat Milk for my copycat coffee drinks because it froths well.

Plant-based milks generally don’t froth as well as real milk, so the consistency may be slightly thinner than when using real dairy products.

I also used oat creamer because I wanted to add more body to this recipe.

Several brands reportedly make non-dairy eggnog, but since I wanted you to be able to have a homemade eggnog latte at any time of the year, we will forego it.

But know that you can certainly use premade eggnog instead, or you can follow a traditional recipe for eggnog if you like.

Using premade egg nog simplifies this recipe because you can skip the spices and flavor syrup.

Simply combine the eggnog with espresso as you would if making a traditional latte.

If you’re making a 12-ounce mug, combine 2 shots of espresso with approximately 1.25 cups of steamed and frothed eggnog.

You can sprinkle with a dusting of fresh nutmeg and enjoy!

Spices

As eggnog fans will tell you, the spices make the drink!

For this recipe, I use cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of clove to give it that authentic eggnog flavor.

The spices add a subtle flavor to the drink without verging on overwhelming.

And your house will smell fantastic as you whip up this drink at home!

Syrup

Instead of vanilla coffee syrup, this drink’s sweetness comes from maple syrup.

The warm, caramel flavor of maple syrup perfectly complements the other flavors of this drink without making it sickeningly sweet.

Add a bit of vanilla extract to get that hint of vanilla flavor for this classic drink.

And if you want a slightly sweeter drink, feel free to add some homemade vanilla syrup.

Sugar is my kryptonite, and I’m always looking for ways to reduce my intake, so feel free to sweeten it to your taste!

Espresso

My copycat recipes can be made using a French press instead of an espresso machine.

Although I have an espresso machine, it’s easier to clean the French press and, therefore, simply use it instead of the machine.

However, you can also use instant espresso by following the package brewing instructions.

You can also use a more strongly brewed version of your regular morning coffee.

Use whatever is easiest for you!

With this simple recipe, you can recreate holiday magic any time of the year!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings 1 person

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp finely ground espresso
  • 3.5 cups hot water
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup creamy oat milk
  • ½ cup oat creamer

Instructions

  • Put the finely ground espresso in a French press and add the hot water. Allow to steep for 6-10 minutes before pouring your "espresso" into a separate pitcher for storage. You can keep the coffee in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Put the maple syrup in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until the syrup becomes very thin.
  • Add the brown sugar and continue heating until the sugar has melted and the mixture has turned bubbly.
  • Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Stir and add the vanilla extract and both the oat milk and oat creamer until the mixture is heated to your ideal temperature. The brown sugar mixture will appear to harden when you add the cold milk but with additional heating, it should combine nicely.
  • Using a handheld milk frother, froth your "eggnog" mixture to your ideal consistency.
  • Fill your mug halfway with the "espresso" followed by the steamed and frothed eggnog and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sugar is in a Vanilla Oat Nog Latte?

According to the Caribou website, a medium size of this latte contains 50 grams of sugar.

But by making this recipe at home, you can significantly decrease the amount of added sugar without sacrificing flavor.

Note that when making this recipe at home using premade eggnog, the sugar content of this drink is likely to be much higher than by making the above homemade version.

How many calories are in a Vanilla Oat Nog Latte?

The Caribou website lists the medium-sized drink as having 380 calories.

The calories in a homemade version will vary depending on the type of milk you use and whether you use premade eggnog, which is likely to be higher in calories than the above recipe.

Can you order a Vanilla Oat Nog Latte all year?

Unfortunately, no. The Vanilla Oat Nog Latte is a seasonal drink only offered at Caribou during Christmas.

But with the above recipe, you can make this drink at any time of year!

Can you make an iced Vanilla Oat Nog Latte?

Absolutely! You will still want to follow the above recipe to make an “eggnog” with that classic flavor, but instead of pouring it into a mug, fill your favorite glass with ice and pour the espresso and eggnog into it. Stir to combine, and enjoy!

Final Thoughts

Thanks to this recipe, you can keep the holiday spirit alive all year!

The Vanilla Oat Nog Latte pairs exceptionally well with Hallmark’s Christmas in July.

And as someone who keeps their Christmas lights up all year long, who am I to judge if you decide to put up your tree a little early this year???
