What is a Cranberry Dark Chocolate Espresso Shaker?

This subtle yet sweet treat is a delectable combination of homemade cranberry simple syrup, melty dark chocolate, and espresso served over ice.
The drink is finished with just a splash of oat milk.
It’s the perfect drink for anyone who craves a savory, with a hint of sweet, drink on the rocks.
What’s in a Cranberry Dark Chocolate Espresso Shaker?
This drink comes together quickly with a few simple ingredients.

Espresso
One foundational element of this drink is fresh espresso.
For a standard 12 to 16-ounce drink, you’ll need 2 shots of espresso.
However, you can add more or less espresso, depending on the level of caffeination you want/need.
If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can also use instant espresso.
You can also make an espresso equivalent in a French press by combining 3.5 cups of hot water and 4 tablespoons of finely ground coffee.
Allow to steep for 6 minutes before pouring out your “espresso.”
When using the French press method, add 1/4 cup of “espresso.”
Although not as authentic as other methods for producing a fresh cup of espresso, the French press is a nice (and relatively cheap!) option.
Cranberry Flavor Syrup

Although you can buy cranberry flavor syrup, it’s just as easy to make it yourself at home.
One of the benefits of making it at home is that you can control the ingredients and eliminate artificial colors, flavors, or additives such as soy lecithin.
My version only contains 3 ingredients: water, sugar, and cranberries.
Remember that without preservatives, the syrup won’t stay fresh quite as long as those store-bought brands.
I generally plan to use my homemade syrups within a couple of weeks and keep them stored in the fridge.
You can adjust the batch of syrup to make more or less depending on how many drinks you plan to make.
My recipes generally yield smaller syrup batches, so you won’t have to throw out a lot of unused syrup.
Depending on the time of year, it can be tough to find fresh cranberries, so you can use frozen ones. However, avoid freeze-dried cranberries, as the flavor won’t transfer as well.
Dark Chocolate
You have several options for incorporating dark chocolate into this drink.
Dark chocolate chips are easy to work with and melt pretty quickly.
You can buy dark chocolate syrup, another easy option.
I used the Ghirardelli dark chocolate squares for this recipe because I had an abundance of them and thought they would add a bold chocolate flavor to the drink.
It’s ideal to melt the chocolate and then mix it in with the espresso while it’s hot to ensure better mixing and an amazing melt.
If you choose the syrup, you can also add it directly to the hot espresso for the best results.
Milk
The Caribou version uses oat milk to finish this drink, but you can use whatever type of milk you prefer.
Other non-dairy options include soy or almond milk.
Although you could try coconut milk, it will likely add a hint of coconut flavor that may not mix well with the other flavors.
But feel free to experiment with the basic recipe to find your favorite version of this recipe!

Cranberry Dark Chocolate Espresso Shaker Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup cranberries fresh or frozen
- 1 square Ghirardelli dark chocolate can substitute 1/8 cup dark chocolate chips
- 2 shots espresso
- 1/4 cup oat milk or milk of your choice
- ice
Instructions
- Combine the granulated sugar and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. While stirring occasionally, bring to a boil and then allow to simmer for about 5 minutes until the sugar completely dissolves.
- Continue simmering, and add the cranberries. Stir occasionally and continue simmering until the cranberries have burst. This step takes around 8-10 minutes.
- Pour the syrup through a strainer to remove the cranberry chunks and allow it to cook to room temperature. Once cooled, store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- Place the dark chocolate in a small glass bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until the chocolate completely melts.
- Pull 2 shots of espresso and combine with the melted chocolate.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add 1-2 tablespoon of cranberry syrup and the espresso/melted chocolate mixture. Shake for 1-2 minutes and pour into your favorite glass.
- Finish with a splash of oat milk and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make a hot version of a cranberry dark chocolate espresso shaker?
Absolutely! Omit the ice and add a bit more milk. This new drink is less of an espresso shaker and more of a latte.
You can also froth the milk before adding the cranberry syrup to the drink for added indulgence.
Top with whipped cream and a light dusting of cocoa powder to take this drink over the top!
Can you make a cranberry dark chocolate espresso shaker without an espresso machine?
Yes! In the article above, I explain how to use a French press to make fresh espresso.
There are a couple of other cheaper alternatives to a big fancy machine.
One is the Aeropress, a space-saving device that combines pressure with microfiltration to create a perfect cup of espresso.
The second is the Moka pot, a stovetop device that delivers a perfect shot of espresso.
Both devices are much cheaper and take up way less countertop space than a traditional espresso machine.
What other drinks are on the Caribou holiday menu in 2024?
Caribou’s 2024 holiday menu features a host of old and new favorites. The Ho Ho Mint Mocha and Vanilla Oat Nog Latte will return this year, as will the Spicy Mocha.
In addition to the cranberry dark chocolate espresso shaker, they are introducing the Cranberry Energy Drink with Coconutmilk Cold Foam alongside several sweet food items guaranteed to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth.
If you like their coffee beans and ground coffee, the Bold North and Reindeer Blend also return to stores this season.
