I live for a great cup of coffee, but that doesn’t mean I want to spend a small fortune on it. 

Fortunately, there is a wide range of coffee makers to fit all needs and budgets. 

There are even a couple that can double as compact coffee makers and make a decent shot of espresso.

Here are a few of the basic features considered when evaluating the best budget coffee makers on this list.

Obviously, the end goal is a delicious cup of joe, so brew quality is #1 for me.

Brew quality varies somewhat between people. 

For example, I love a full-body flavor in my morning brew and adore French presses.

On the other hand, my brother prefers not to have stray coffee grounds in his mug and loves his pour-over coffee filtered.

Taste preferences sometimes determine whether you’ll be drawn to one type of brew method over another.

I’ll do my best to disclose certain characteristics that may make you more or less drawn to a particular brew method.

Coffee matters, and I do my research but not to the point of excess as many random consumer reports websites you’ll find on Google.

And if you’re like me, you already spend most of your time cleaning up after people in your household, and you definitely don’t want to waste precious energy on rigorous coffee machine cleaning protocols.

I get it, so I’ve included my honest thoughts about each option’s basic care in this review post.

As a minimalist who lives with a bunch of people who adore extra stuff, I prefer kitchen appliances with a compact design.

My countertop space is precious, and aside from brewing time and cleaning ease, design is an essential element when evaluating coffee equipment.

It’s easy to clean and travels well.

After some experimentation, I’ve come to prefer espresso from the Aeropress over the French press because it’s less messy and quicker.

Regardless of which model on this list appeals most to you, here are a few tips to maximize your brew performance.

Coffee Grind Matters

If you crave the freshest cup of coffee possible, buy beans and grind your own right before you brew.

You may also experiment with grind settings. Depending on the type of brew you crave, you will need to choose between a finer and coarser grind.

For example, you generally want a fine grind when making espresso, but coarse is better for cold brew.

Because I wanted better control over grind settings at a lower price point, I love the Javapresse manual coffee grinder!

With the turn of a dial, I can quickly adjust for different brews while maximizing freshness. 

Use Filtered Water

Good coffee starts with the freshest possible water, free of contaminants or off-flavors.

If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, I wouldn’t recommend using it for your coffee, either. 

For the freshest possible brew, use filtered water.

I love my Brita pitcher and find it makes a stellar cup of coffee. 

The only problem is that everyone else in my house loves this water, too, but I’m always the one filling it. 

Anyway, I digress.

Bottled water also works when you’re striving for the freshest possible brew.

Clean Your Machine

Regardless of the cheap coffee maker you choose, cleaning it regularly will help ensure the best cup of coffee. 

One of the main reasons I switched away from automatic coffee machines was because I found that the coffee would taste amazing for the first couple of months.

But when it came time for the vinegar cleaning and descaling, the coffee suddenly tasted bitter.

Other brew methods don’t require the same cleaning protocols, and I found that my coffee tasted great regardless of whether it was the first month or third year I had my French press.
